Berjaya Air suspended flight operation to Pulau Tioman

Berjaya Air, the only carrier that flies to Tioman Island recently cancelled all its flight operations to Pulau Tioman Airport with effect from 1st March, 2014 due to operational reasons till further notice.

Tioman Island Airport, located in Tekek village is not so big with the small landing space. The airplane also needs to take a long turn during landing in order to avoid mountains on the way. Though, not major incidents were reported in the past, but the cancellation of flight operation might be keeping in mind the passenger safety. Malaysia is also hit with the series of plane crashes in 2014.

As there are no other airlines that fly to the Island other than Berjaya Air, it has caused a major problem for the tourists to get to Tioman Island. Tourists now have to opt for the mix of bus and ferry ride in order to reach Pulau Tioman.

There are two jetty terminals in Mersing & Tanjung Gemuk which takes tourist to Tioman Island on a boat. Tourist need to get to these places first by bus from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Melaka or Johor Bahru. There is also an option to go by car, but it might not be an ideal option for the tourists.

The suspension of flight has also caused a major problem for the tourism of Tioman Island. There are not many options left for tourists and they have to opt for the ferry rides. There is a huge shift of passengers and the ferry rides are getting crowded as well. It is highly recommended for tourists to put extra hours and lag time while planning a trip to Tioman Island.

Pulau Tioman received plenty of tourists every year as the island is famous for being the best diving destination in Malaysia. The clear water and beaches in the island also offers plenty of snorkeling opportunities for the tourists as well.
